Why are stablecoins used for AI agent payments?

They let software pay software directly. A stablecoin moves over the internet at any hour, in amounts as small as needed, settles in seconds or minutes and holds a steady value, unlike volatile tokens. Protocols such as x402 build on that, so an agent can pay per request without a card or bank account.

Can AI agents pay in USDC?

Yes. Circle issues USDC natively on many blockchains, including Ethereum, Base, Solana and Polygon, and an agent with a wallet holding it can send payments or pay APIs that accept it over x402. Circle states that USDC is backed by cash and cash equivalents and redeemable one for one for US dollars.

Which blockchains are best for AI agent payments?

Those where the stablecoin you need is issued natively, fees are low, settlement is fast and your counterparties already are. For pay-per-request payments over x402, live facilitators support networks including Base, Solana, Polygon and Avalanche. Larger, less frequent payments can tolerate higher fees on Ethereum mainnet.

Can AI agents pay on Solana?

Yes. Circle issues USDC natively on Solana, x402 has payment schemes for Solana that live facilitators support, and its test facilitator works on Solana devnet. Solana distinguishes confirmed blocks, voted on by a supermajority of stake, from finalized ones, so an agent can choose how final a payment must be.

Can AI agents pay on Base?

Yes. Circle issues USDC natively on Base, live x402 facilitators support it, and x402's test facilitator runs on Base Sepolia, so developers often start agent payments there. Base is built by Coinbase. An agent needs a wallet on Base holding USDC, plus gas or a paymaster to cover network fees.

How do AI agents handle gas fees?

Either the agent holds a little of the chain's native token for gas, or someone else covers it. With account abstraction, a paymaster can sponsor gas or accept a stablecoin instead, and in x402 the facilitator submits the settlement transaction for the seller. Budget for gas separately from what the agent spends.

Are onchain agent payments reversible?

No. Once an onchain payment is final, the network will not reverse it, and there is no chargeback mechanism. A mistaken or disputed payment can only be undone if the recipient sends the money back, so the checks have to happen before the agent pays, not after.

Which stablecoins do AI agents use most?

Dollar stablecoins such as USDC are common in agent payment tools, because they are issued on many chains and supported by payment protocols and processors; Stripe, for example, accepts USDC. Choose one your counterparties accept on the network you use, and check the issuer's reserve disclosures.

How fast do onchain agent payments settle?

It depends on the chain and on how final the payment must be. Solana distinguishes confirmed blocks from finalized ones, and Ethereum finalizes a block once two checkpoints are linked by validators holding two-thirds of staked ETH. Agents can wait for finality on large payments and accept earlier confirmation on small ones.

How do you convert an AI agent's stablecoin balance to fiat?

Send it to an off-ramp, such as an exchange, the issuer or a payment provider, which converts it and pays out to a bank account. Issuers of regulated dollar stablecoins redeem them one for one; Circle states USDC is always redeemable one for one for US dollars. Expect identity checks, since off-ramps are regulated businesses.

How do you reconcile onchain agent payments with accounting systems?

Record each payment's transaction hash, chain, token, amount, counterparty and business reason, then match it to the invoice or order. Fees paid in the chain's native token need their own entries. Processors that settle stablecoin payments into a fiat balance, as Stripe does, simplify this by reporting them like other payment methods.

What is a cross-chain payment for an AI agent?

It is a payment where the agent's funds sit on one blockchain and the recipient expects them on another. The money is moved by a bridge, an intent solver or a burn-and-mint protocol such as Circle's CCTP, which burns USDC on the source chain and mints it on the destination without liquidity pools.
