How can a business accept crypto payments?
Use a payment processor or crypto payment gateway that accepts stablecoins and other tokens at checkout and can settle to you in fiat, or accept payments directly into your own wallet. Stripe, for example, lets US businesses accept stablecoins, with the funds settling in their Stripe balance in US dollars.

How do stablecoins work?
A stablecoin is a token on a blockchain designed to keep a steady value, usually one US dollar. The issuer creates tokens when customers deposit money, redeems them for money on request and holds reserves to back them. Under the US GENIUS Act, payment stablecoins need full backing with liquid assets such as dollars or short-term Treasuries.

What are stablecoins used for in payments?
Mostly for moving dollars quickly over the internet: cross-border payments without correspondent banks, payouts to suppliers and contractors, online checkout and machine payments such as per-request API fees. They settle at any hour, which matters for businesses and AI agents that operate outside banking hours.

How do you accept crypto payments on a website?
Enable a stablecoin or crypto payment method through your payment provider, so customers can pay from their wallet at checkout. With Stripe, customers are redirected to connect a wallet and pay, and you receive US dollars in your balance. To accept directly instead, show your wallet address and watch the chain for the payment.

What are stablecoins backed by?
Fiat-backed stablecoins are backed by reserves such as cash and short-term government securities. Circle says USDC is fully backed by cash and cash equivalents, most of them held in a government money market fund. The US GENIUS Act requires payment stablecoins to be fully backed by liquid assets like dollars or short-term Treasuries.

What are the risks of using stablecoins for payments?
The peg can slip if reserves are mismanaged, payments cannot be reversed or charged back, lost keys or phishing can mean permanent loss, and holdings usually lack deposit insurance. Rules also differ by jurisdiction. Reduce the risks with regulated, transparently reserved stablecoins, good key security and checks before each payment.

How do you set up crypto payments for a business?
Decide whether to settle in crypto or fiat, pick a provider, enable the payment method and test it with testnet tokens before going live. Stripe, for example, requires you to request the stablecoin payment method and wait for approval, and documents testnet steps. Update accounting, tax and refund processes for the new method too.

How do you accept stablecoin payments?
Through a processor that supports them, or directly to a wallet. A processor such as Stripe handles the wallet connection, confirms the payment and settles to you in US dollars. Accepting directly means publishing a wallet address on a supported network, watching for incoming transfers and reconciling them yourself.

What is a crypto payment gateway?
A crypto payment gateway is a service that lets a business accept cryptocurrency, often stablecoins, at checkout. It gives the customer payment details or connects their wallet, detects the onchain payment, confirms it to the merchant and can convert the funds to fiat, so the business never has to hold crypto.

How does a crypto payment gateway work?
At checkout, the gateway shows an amount and address or connects the customer's wallet. The customer sends the payment onchain, the gateway waits for confirmation, marks the order as paid and credits the merchant, either in crypto or, after conversion, in fiat, as Stripe does with US dollars.

What is a stablecoin payment gateway?
A stablecoin payment gateway is a crypto payment gateway focused on stablecoins such as USDC. Because the price is stable, customers pay a predictable amount and the merchant avoids price swings, and the gateway can settle in stablecoins or convert them to fiat for the business.

Why do businesses use stablecoins?
For speed and reach. Stablecoins settle in seconds or minutes at any hour, cross borders without correspondent banks and often cost less than traditional cross-border transfers. Businesses use them for supplier payments, payouts, moving treasury between entities and accepting payments from customers who hold them.

How do you settle stablecoin payments into a bank account?
Use a provider that converts the stablecoins and pays out to your bank. Processors such as Stripe settle stablecoin payments into your balance in US dollars, which then pays out like card revenue. If you hold the stablecoins yourself, redeem them with the issuer or sell them through a regulated exchange.

What is stablecoin settlement?
Stablecoin settlement is the final transfer of value in a stablecoin payment: the tokens move onchain from payer to payee, and once the transaction is final, the payee owns them. It can happen at any hour and can be followed by conversion to fiat if the business does not want to hold stablecoins.

What does the GENIUS Act mean for stablecoin payments?
The GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, created the first US federal framework for payment stablecoins. Issuers must back them fully with liquid assets such as dollars or short-term Treasuries, disclose their reserves monthly and follow anti-money-laundering and sanctions rules, and holders are paid first if an issuer fails.

How do stablecoin payouts work?
A business sends stablecoins from its wallet to recipients' wallets, often through a payout provider's API, instead of making bank transfers. Recipients can hold the stablecoins or convert them to local currency. It suits payouts to many recipients across countries, where bank transfers are slow or costly.

Can stablecoins be used for cross-border B2B payments?
Yes. Stablecoins move between companies in different countries without correspondent banks, settling at any hour and often with lower fees than traditional cross-border transfers. Both sides need wallets, or providers that convert to local currency, and the rules differ by jurisdiction.

What are programmable payments with stablecoins?
Programmable payments are payments whose conditions are written in code: pay on delivery, release funds in instalments, split revenue automatically or stop above a spending limit. With stablecoins, smart contracts enforce these rules onchain, and once deployed the code runs exactly as written.

Stablecoin transfers vs SWIFT: how do speed and cost compare?
Traditional cross-border transfers, sent over bank networks such as SWIFT, often pass through correspondent banks, which can add days and fees. Stablecoin transfers settle onchain in seconds or minutes at any hour, usually with fewer intermediaries and lower fees, but they need wallets or currency conversion at each end.

How do refunds work for crypto payments?
There are no chargebacks onchain, so a refund is a new payment from the merchant back to the customer's wallet. Processors such as Stripe send refunds onchain to the customer. Decide the refund currency and how to handle price changes for volatile tokens, a problem stablecoins largely avoid.

Can an AI agent hold a stablecoin treasury?
It can, but it should not control one alone. Keep the treasury in a wallet with multisig or policy controls owned by the business, and give the agent only a limited allowance or session key for its tasks. Larger moves out of the treasury should need human approval.
