How can AI agents handle procurement and purchase orders?

An agent can draft purchase requests from internal needs, compare approved suppliers' prices and terms, raise purchase orders within budget, and match invoices to orders and receipts before payment. Approval rules, supplier checks and payment limits should sit outside the agent, as in Visa's pilot that pays only buyer-approved invoices.

How do AI agents manage subscriptions and recurring payments?

An agent can track subscriptions, flag unused ones, cancel or renew them, and pay recurring charges within a mandate that sets the merchant, amount and frequency. Card stored-credential rules and India's e-mandate framework already govern recurring charges, so agents work within them, including notice before debits where rules require it.

How do AI agents work in cross-border B2B payments?

An agent can prepare and send cross-border supplier payments and choose the rail: bank transfers, cards or stablecoins, which settle at any hour without correspondent banks. Sanctions screening, AML checks and currency rules still apply, so those checks have to run before every payment the agent makes.

How do AI agents pay for cloud compute or data on demand?

Over pay-per-request protocols such as x402: the provider prices each call or unit of data, and the agent pays when it needs the resource and gets it immediately, without a subscription. A budget and a per-call price ceiling stop a looping agent from running up costs.

Which industries are adopting agentic payments first?

Early activity is in online retail, through card network agent programs and checkout protocols; B2B payables, where Visa has piloted invoice-paying agents; developer tools and data APIs, through pay-per-request x402 payments; and crypto, where agents already trade and transfer onchain.
